Kazuo Shinohara: souvenirs de voyage

In 1976 Kazuo Shinohara made a sudden, brief trip to several West African countries in an active spirit of reconnaissance, having only once before left Japan to travel in Europe and Morocco. He later visited the U.S., Australia, and again Europe, plus a relatively brief trip to South America, including Machu Picchu.

While Shinohara never considered himself a photographer, the numerous photo documents of these parts of the world, especially the tropics, are indicative of his curiosity about cultures and peoples unrelated in any way to those of Japan. He believed strongly in the universality of human behavior, however unfamiliar its manifestations, and sought to portray its divers certainty through his work.

Here is a selection of photographs taken by Kazuo Shinohara himself during his various trips.
